Previously working Windows 10 VPN connections to Meraki MX firewall via Meraki client VPN have been working fine. One morning user cannot establish connections anymore with the error:

A connection to the remote computer could not be established. You might need to change the network settings for this connection.

NBN HFC 1000Mbps Meraki MX64 throughput testing

14/7/2021

New NBN HFC plans providing speeds of up to 1000mbps down and 50mbps up are now available. At the time of writing Aussie Broadband is providing the NBN Home Ultrafast plan rated at 1000/50 for $119 a month for the first 6 months.

Business class firewalls can provide more advanced security features and in the case of Cisco Meraki devices the  Advanced Security License provides
  • Content filtering
  • Google SafeSearch and YouTube for Schools
  • Intrusion detection and prevention (IDS/IPS)
  • Advanced Malware Protection (AMP)
These kind of features require processing power and often to the detriment of raw internet throughput, as such the Cisco Meraki MX64 and MX64W are rated at:
  • 200 Mbps - Max throughput with all security features enabled
  • 250 Mbps - Max stateful (L3) firewall throughput in passthrough mode
  • 200 Mbps - Max stateful (L3) firewall throughput in NAT mode
  • 100 Mbps - Max site-to-site VPN throughput
In testing this resulted in speeds of ~108Mbps down and ~35Mbps up on an Aussie Broadband 100/40Mbps plan

Speed tests on the newer Aussie Broadband Home Ultrafast 1000/50Mbps via a Cisco Meraki MX64 on Advanced Security License with Advanced Malware Protection (AMP) enabled and Intrusion detection and prevention set to Prevention and Security Ruleset resulted in speeds of ~250Mbps down and ~45Mbps up.

Synology RackStation RS3617xs+ dual 10GbE link aggregation LACP

26/6/2020

Out of the box the Synology RackStation RS3617xs+ comes with 4 x 1GbE & 2 x 10GbE ports. In order to provide a higher total bandwidth for multiple 10GbE video editing workstations, LACP can be enabled to increase throughput.

Step one is to source a suitable 10GbE switch such has the D-Link DXS-1210-10TS with its included 8 10GBase-T Ports and 2 SFP+ ports.

It is also recommended to connect and configure from one of the other 4 x 1GbE Lan ports to allow connection to the NAS in the event the Bond setup fails and the unit can no longer resolve an IP address for management.

The RS3617+ ports of LAN 5 & LAN 6 need to be selected with Link Aggregation mode of IEEE 802.3ad Dynamic Link Aggregation

Next from the D-Link switch head to L2 Features > Link Aggregation
Select the ports you connected the Synology NAS, set mode to Passive and click Add.
(Leaving Mode to On instead of Active or Passive will report the link as failed within the Synology)

Once correctly enabled the Synology will report the Bond Network Status as 20000 Mbps. With this now enabled a selection of Mac Pros, Macbook Pros with Thunderbolt 10GbE USB C adapters and Windows workstation computers can now connect over the 10GbE links with more network overhead.

With standard spinning disks configured in RAID 10 the hard drive throughput should max out before the network does.

While booting the machine on hold down the Command (⌘)+ S keys on the keyboard.
You have done this correctly if you start to see the computer boot to a black screen with white text detailing the system boot process.
Once the boot process has finished type the following:
/sbin/fsck -fy
/sbin/mount -uw /

launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.opendirectoryd.plist
passwd root
Type the new root password twice once prompted. Once finished reboot the computer with:
reboot
Once the Mac has restarted you should see the option to select “Other…” as a user sign in option. Enter the username of “root” and password you created earlier
